Expedition Strategy: Fast tactical transit across the Sierra Nevada and Great Basin via interstate to establish a base back East. Once aligned north, the route strictly tracks secondary highways and alpine passes, staying clear of low-altitude deserts to maximize cool temperatures and mountain twisties.
Leg 1: The Fast Great Basin Launch
~690 Miles | Peak: 7,200 ft
Depart Menlo Park and immediately clear urban spaces using I-80 East over Donner Pass. Ride high across the high plateaus of Northern Nevada to Winnemucca, turning up US-95 North through the high eastern valleys of Oregon into the deep river basins of northern Idaho.
Transit Clear: Quick mileage generation out of California via multi-lane freeways.
Sierra Ridgeway: Climbs instantly over Donner Pass to set high-altitude pacing early.
Pick up US-12 East directly out of Lewiston. This kicks off the remote country riding with more than 100 continuous miles along the Lochsa River canyon, banking through sweeping, rhythmic corners all the way up to the dense pine forests of the Lolo Pass crest before descending into Missoula.
Rhythmic Sweepers: Hours of uninterrupted mid-gear cornering transitions along the river flow.
Deep Woods Microclimate: Low temperatures driven by dense forest canopies and river spray.
Historical Ridge: Tracks the remote geographic path utilized by early transcontinental explorers.
Leg 3: Yellowstone High Plateau
~320 Miles | Peak: 8,000+ ft
Drop south from Missoula down the Gallatin Valley via US-191. Enter the western gates of Yellowstone, holding elevations near 8,000 feet as you cruise across the central volcanic plateau before exiting East through the Absaroka gorges down into Cody.
Absaroka Gorges: Towering vertical canyon riding outside Cody's western boundary.
Frontier Staging: Historic stopover points with exceptional local mechanics and dining infrastructure.
Leg 4: Chief Joseph & Beartooth Alpine Crest
~110 Miles | Peak: 10,947 ft
The technical crown jewel of the trip. Point north from Cody onto Wyoming 296 (Chief Joseph Highway), diving through switchbacks to clear the Sunlight Basin suspension bridge. Intersect US-212 at Cooke City, climbing straight up into the alpine tundra of Beartooth Pass before tracking the drop-offs into Red Lodge.
Alpine Tundra: Sustained riding completely above the tree line among glacial fields.
Technical Switchbacks: Severe elevation changes combined with steep, exposed hairpin geometry.
Unmatched Sightlines: Full 360-degree mountain range profiles across multiple states.
Leg 5: The Rocky Mountain Front
~270 Miles | Peak: 5,200 ft
Steer northwest away from the flat interstate valleys. Use MT-78 and secondary country state roads up through Harlowton and Lewistown, cutting over to Choteau. This track positions you directly against the massive vertical limestone wall where the plains meet the Rockies.
Limestone Reefs: Stunning continuous views of the abrupt geological shelf formations.
Empty Asphalt: Bypasses main commercial transit lines for clear, unbothered riding.
High-Plains Rims: High visibility fields allows you to track changing mountain weather dynamically.
Leg 6: The Cowboy Trail Entry
~260 Miles | Peak: 4,500 ft
Run north via US-89 along the mountain face to clear the international boundary line at the Carway crossing. Immediately pick up Alberta Route 22 (The Cowboy Trail) north through rolling sub-alpine cattle country, entering Calgary from the quiet, panoramic western foothills.
Foothill Sweep: Sweeping, elevation-changing prairie transitions against the high western peaks.
Commercial Escape: Runs completely parallel to the flat, crowded industrial Highway 2 corridor.
Sub-Alpine Entry: Spectacular approach view of the high urban skyline appearing over the ranch land.
Leg 7: The Trans-Kootenay High Pass
~390 Miles | Peak: 5,823 ft
Strike west out of Calgary on Hwy 1 into the jagged limestone gates of Banff. Divert south quickly along the stunning Kootenay National Park Parkway (BC-93 South), carving past sheer walls and hanging glaciers down to Radium Hot Springs. Track the quiet river trenches down to Cranbrook, linking into the Crowsnest Highway (BC-3) to conquer the massive, technical sweeping switchbacks of Kootenay Pass before descending into Nelson.
Glacial Trenches: Deep mountain valley riding flanking frozen jagged summits along BC-93.
The Canadian Apex: Kootenay Pass provides exceptional high-altitude asphalt texture and massive radius banking curves.
Mountain Haven: Nelson offers a historic, vibrant lakeside stop filled with exceptional mountain culture.
Leg 8: The Southern Cascade Ridge
~415 Miles | Peak: 4,403 ft
Maintain course westward along the remote spine of BC-3 (Crowsnest Highway). Climb high out of the river channels over the Monashee sub-ranges and crest the massive overlook at Anarchist Mountain. Push through Princeton and ascend the sub-alpine forests of Manning Park over Allison Pass. Drop through the vertical canyon canyons of Hope, then trace the quiet, agricultural north bank of the Fraser River along BC-7 (Lougheed Highway) for an unhurried, pastoral entrance into Vancouver.
